Catholic church of Kishinev

The Roman Catholic cemetery situated in the South-Western part of Kishinev at the Valeyat number 11 Trandafirilor street and according to an urban tradition named the Polish cemetery is not preserved completely. Earlier the plot of irregular rectangular form (area was 80x108 m) with building of home for the elderly with garden. In modern sight the Catholic cemetery hasn’t clear-cut boundary with the Armenian-Gregorian one and both of them cemeteries are apprehended as a single whole.

 At the contemporary map of Kishinev the Rroman Catholic cemetery is marked with “A”.

From the end of the 40th years of XX century it was transformed into a regular one. In the 60th years the South-western part of the Catholic cemetery as the Armenian Gregorian one were withdrawn from using by communities, tombstones were brought down, plots were cleared away for new burial places. The problem of Kishinev surbub the Ortodox cemetaries regulation refers to 1808 and isconnected with the activity of Metropolitan Gavriil Banulesku-Bodony and Russian officials Kushnikov S.S. and Krasno-Milashevich V.I.,the senators headed in the Divans ofMoldavia and Walachia when “established country cemeteries… and churches, as people hada tradition to bury the dead near to the churches. The cemeteries were enclosed with wattle-fences..” After 1812 year in the Bessarabian district and especially in Kishinev together withZadunaisky settlers appeared people that came from Russia and West Europe, the mostof them belonged to the Catholic and the Protestant Churches. In 1838 year German traveler Kol I.G.appreciating multinational structure of Kishinev population had written: “We stayed at Armenia who came from Galicia… There are so much Germans in Kishinev that they have their own church and special clergyman. It is numbered 200 Germans evangelists in the town, but among 800catholics, probably are Germans too.Of course, the most of catholics are the poles. The French are few.” Along withattempts of regulation city structure of “Old town” and its accomplishment with the citybuilding extension on new territories were appeared the maps of Kishinev of 1817 and 1834 years. At the map of 1817 made by the land-surveyor and architect Ozmidov M.S.(1782-1826) were indicted places for the Christians cemeteries of “the Armenian, Catholic and Lutheran Confessions”. It was written in literary miscellany “Presa Buna” that In 1822 year Catholic cemetery was founded simultaneously with the parish in Kishinev. However in 1823 in the report to Bessarabian Civil governor Katakazy K.A. of Kishinev division for 5 parts this Ozmidov mentioned new city cemeteries as the active ones.

Bezvikony G.G., a researcher of Bessarabian oldness, in his essay devoted to Kishinev 500 /five-hundredth/ anniversary notes the fact that at the Catholic cemeteryin 1849 general Pisarzhevsky Ighati Feodorovich was buried. His grave and tombstone not preserved.This author notes that at the grave of V.Pisarzhevsky was established an original sculptural monument of Mark Antokolsky . Also the tombstones of the first catholic priests Luke Duminsky and Fillip Ozhelsky,Noblewomen Antonina Mikushevsky, Ann Shabelsky, Frants Bitinsky (+1877), Woman from Warszawa Salomeia Ezersky (+1876), nobleman Yan Ventskovsky (+1876, 75 Years old), little son named Kniykshto of noblemen Henrih and Sofia Benkevich (+1891), Tomas Sherer, Maria Dabija, born as Boto, Agneshka Tsvikla, the daughter of “sitochniki”(?) Polish Kingdom Yuzef and Rozalia Tsvikla, the colonists-owners of Village Candel from Odessa district Sebastian and Elisabeth Mozer, Iulian Mihnevich (38 years old) who hadn’t any rights and others.

Also were not preserved /retained/ tombstones ofthe first Catholic priests of Kishinev parish Luke Duminsky and Fillip Ozhelsky,the people of parish noblewoman Antonina Mikushevsky, Ann Shabelsky, Frants Bitinsky (+1877),a woman from Warszawa Salomeia Ezersky (+1876), a nobleman Yan Ventskovsky (+1876, 75 Years old), a little son named Kniykshto of a noblemen Henrih and Sofia Benkevich (+1891), Tomas Sherer, Maria Dabija, born as Boto, Agneshka Tsvikla, a daughter of Yuzef and Rozalia Tsvikla who was the people of a /rare/ confession of the Polish Kingdom.the colonists-proprietors from Candel Village , of the Odessa region,Sebastian and Elisabeth Mozer, Iulian Mihnevich (38 years old) deprived all his rights, and others.

In the list of some remained tombstones is

Barodtsev Antony Ivanovich. This is a monument of sandstone with the Christian symbolic ofmoon, sun, cross and wicker ornament made in local traditions. The sign is the inscription is‘‘Here lie the remains of the servant of God Antony Ivanovich Barodtsev’’.

Basso Andrea (+1882, aged 52 years) from Italy. The tombstone was made of limestone in the form of a log. The inscription is in Italian language.

Wienckowski Ivan Ignatievich (+ 05.06.1876), ancestor of the Polish Shleahta from Poznani, owner of the houses at Alexsandrovsky and Leovsky Street in Kishinev. The tombstone is made of marble.

Wienckowski Piotr Ivanovich (1832-1911), legal adviser, officer of the Bessarabian regional government;In 1829 year he was the head of the Bessarabian financial court of law, honored magistrate;In 1912 at the Catholic cemetery home for the elderly was build at his own expense.

The grave cross is made of labrodorite. The fence is made of cast iron.

The Wielhorski, Bessarabian noblemen, the ancestors of Xaveri Wiielhorsky. The stone monument is with forged cross. 1913 year. It has the inscription “Familia Wielhorskich”

Winkowska Maria (+19.07.1936). It is a forged cross of iron with beautiful design on the stone pedestal. The inscription is “S.P. Winkowska Maria. Save me my God. 19.7.1936 year”

Vodzicki Iustine (+1907, aged 85 years).

Wodzicki Maria(+1911, aged 57 years). Wodzicki Maria (+1911, aged 57 years), born as Yanovey-Koscko. Her tombstone is the obelisk made of labrodonite with metal fence of art forging.

Woinarowicz Maria (+1890). Her obelisk made of brown granite.

Woyciechowski Valentin Alexandrovich (1909-1977), professor of architecture, researcher of the Soroksky fortress. His tombstone is as marble obelisk with the portrayal.

Wonsik Antony.

The tombstone made of sandstone and white granite as a cross at the temple.

Golcz Elena (+1871), maiden. Her marble tombstone is an architectural composition with symbols of life and death.

 Zaiaczkowski Valerian (+1884, aged 68), general-major. The marble obelisk with his coat of armsand the text in Polish language. There are forged railings of art work.

Zolmanovich Anna (+1898). It’s a small tombstone with the crucifix made of Kosoutsky stone. with the inscription ‘‘Here lie the remains of the servant of God...as of Anna Andreevna Zolmanovich +8.01.1898, aged 57”

The Jukowski, Jukowski Ignatii Feodorovich (+26.12.1819), officer of the Bessarabian regional Court,Maria (+1820), Vladimir.Their tombstones are preserved badly.

Zurakowski Marian-Valerii Konradovich (15.08.1860-30.03.1932), doctor of medicine, famousdoctor of Kishinev, worked in the ambulatory of the Gerbovetsky Red Cross community, owner of a house at Jukowski street. His headstone made of gray granitewithout upper part. At the right side there is the text in Polish language«Marian Zurakowski doctor mediciny zmarl 30 marca 1932. Frzerni Panic do chwalyswojei najlepszego meza, Oice zacnego Polaka».

Æóðàêîâñêàÿ (Zurakowski) Þòàÿ«Marian Zurakowski doctor mediciny zmarl 30 marca 1932. Frzerni Panic do chwalyswojei najlepszego meza, Oice zacnego Polaka».Zurakowski Yutaya Matveevna(1843-21.01.1908), in the second marriage as Alatiani-Popovski. The inscription is: «SR lulia primo Zurakowska secunda Alatiani-Popowska zmarla 21 grudnea 1908 majac lat 65. Wieczny odopczywacz dac panie godnei matce I gorlwi Polce. Twoie sercecata ludzkose swa miloscta,ogarnialo wszelka bobuse I cierpientie u nicm swoi rodakow twoie serce weaz, bo. Prezenuiac iednose, milose bratnia, bic przestalo».

Lominski Frantishec (+1884, aged 62 years) and Clawdia Nicolaewna Shults-Moro (+1900). The couple marble obelisks at common pedestal are ornamented by the Wreathes. The upper part is lost. The Polish text is: Here are remains of Luiza Feodorovna Menkini , who died Oct. 10, 1850, in the 50 year of her age.”

Menkini Piotr Matveevich (+27.06.1855).The upper part of their tombstones is marble column at the high pedestal. The texts are inGerman and Russian languages with next inscription “Here are remains of Petr Matveevich Menkini,who died June 27,1855 , in the 66 year of his age.”

Meier Anna Konstantinovna(1838-20.04.1898), daughter of landowner from Yassky district , noblewomanThe inscription is: “Anna Konstantinovna Meier, born Tufesko. She died April 20, 1898. May you rest in peace!”

Mirowski Kazimer (+1909, in the 21 year of his age). The tombstone made of black granite. The text is polish one.

Okuszko Rostislav Vladimirovich (1897-1966), son of Vladimir Fulgentievich Okuszko (1862-1919), founder of the art school in Kishinev.The tombstone made of granite crumble in common fence within unpreserved graves.

Okuszko-Alhazova Ekaterina Vladimirovna (?), daughter of V.F. Okuszko(?), Kishinev architect who worked in interwar period. The simpletombstone made of marble crumble with forged fence of art work.

Ostermann Frants Frantsevich (1844-14.11.1905), emigrant from Bohemia, naturalist, one from creators of the zoological and botanic collections of the Bessarabian gubernatorial museum. From 1891 year he was a custodian of this museum. His tombstone made of red granite with the next texts in Russian and Czech languages: “ Frantishek Ostermann, founder and custodian of theBessarabian museum. Zoologist. November. 1905. To dear husband from mournful wife”.

Ostermann Albina Osipovna (1856-1934), wife of Ostremann F.F.,from 1905 year she was a custodian of the museum. The tombstone made of red granitewith completing metallic cross. Her medallion with the photo and the text is broken. The monuments are in common fence with forged art railings.

Ostrowski Adam (1868-1912), capitan of the 53th Volynsky regiment. The forged railings is of art work.

Holowicki Nikifor (1826-30.10.1856), hereditary nobleman, officer, landowner in Kurcheny village of the Orhey district.

Ohanowich Anna (16.01.1880-13.07.1898). Her sculpture tombstone made of white marble is a monument with the base as a trunk, with the cornice as of running wave. The figure of an angel leaning on a cross rounded with the roses is put off from it. The raillings are forged.

Pilawsky Stanislav (May 23,1904, aged 24 years). His tombstone made ofred granite, worked up with tooth axe as a cut trunk of the tree of knowledge/ of good and evil/, and with the unpreserved cross and portrait.

Pienkowski Vladislav (+1882). The sculptural tombstone made of white marble as a lancet. Arcade, on pedestal, finished with an image of a small Gotic chapel.

Poplawski Stanislav (+1904, aged 24 years). The tombstone made of hewn limestone in the form of cut tree as a symbol of interrupted life. And the forged railings.

Rostowski Adolf (Nov.22, 1906), a captain of the Ostrovsky regiment. It is a stand with open book of white marble.

Swintewski Anteliy. His pedestal is lancet arcade of a complicate form. The portrait and upper part is lost. The material of monument is white marble. There is Polish text, but it is hardly legible.

Skopowska-brzobniewska) Teodora (+25.07.? year,81 years old). Her pedestal made of marble with a pall and a book.

 Steiner Margarita (13.07.1828-1895). It is a marble representation of a Gothic style chapel.

The Tysski, Ippolit (+1898) and Oktavia (+1900). It is a marble tombstone as an obelisk with the forged railings.

Trojanowski Mikhail (+9.03.1885, aged 39 years) war topographer. A stone block with the molten metallic Latin cross. The inscription: «Trojanowski Miehal, wojenny topograf, 39 lat, 9 marzeca 1885. Za ducze brata upraszawam î wiecznosci do Boga».

Teodosiu Anna Antonovna, born as Bujinsky (+1891, in the 40 year of her age) , wife of Teodosiu I.E., landowner in Teleneshti of Orhey district, deputy of the NobilityGubernatorial assembly.

It is a marble sculpture in the form of a solemn woman, with heavy losses of it. There is forged art railings.

Henkel Vitus Boleslav (+Nov. 26, 1896) and Henkel Iulia (+Nov.5,? year). The pedestal made of shell rock in the form of the tree of knowledge with climbing ivy .

Cwikla Nicolay, honourable canonic who was running the Kishinev parish from 1848«Beati mundo corde Quniam Jasi Deum vide-bunt Mathi 5, 8».to 1882 years. It is a marble monument over his grave with the Latin text:«Beati mundo corde Quniam Jasi Deum vide-bunt Mathi 5, 8».

Chybinska Iozefa (+1900) and Jurewicz Ada (+1900). This is granite pedestal with theforged metallic cross of art work.

 Cziszewski Conrad Dominicovich (1856-1886), cornet. It is a tombstone with the forged cross of art work and the Polish text.

Shafirov Alexander alexandrovich (05.03.1862-04.07.1894), son of a titular councellorA.V. Shafirov and Sofia Carlovna Osmolovsky special missionfunctionaryUnder the Bessarabian governor. His tombstone made of white marble with the unpreserved upper part.

Sheidewant Leopold ivanovich (1829-1894), Kishinew municipial architect from 1862 to 1883 years, civil engineer and projector of several churches in state settlements of the Southern Bessarabia, author of Kishinev-planning constructive decisions in the second half of XIX century, house owner.The marble tombstone is a work of professional masters.

It is a sculpture representation of the a cut tree with the symbols of life and death.

Sheidewant Adelaida born as Gasket, daughter of the architect Osip Gasket and sister of the architect Karl-Evgeny Gasket (+27.11.1879). Her tombstone is a column of classical proportions of red granite on massive pedestal.The texts in Polish language are partly preserved. There are the fragments of one more tombstone pairs to the grave of Adel Sheidewant within the Sheiderwandt’s necropolis.

Janczewski Ludvig (+1925). There is a forged tombstone cross on beton pedestal.Evgenia Rybalco.
